What's changed in Google Ads, in short: Google introduced mandatory AI ad-disclosure labels in July 2026 and changed how Target CPA/ROAS bidding delivers on budget-limited campaigns from August 17, which can raise reported CPA without any decline in account health. Alongside this, Google is pushing advertisers off legacy broad match and Dynamic Search Ads toward AI Max, its automation layer, ahead of forced migrations later in 2026 and early 2027. This page tracks every confirmed Google Ads change as it happens; last updated 25 Aug 2026.
Language Targeting Removed from Search and Performance Max
Ads · Medium-High significance · Tier 2 confirmed · Announced August 14, 2026 · Effective September 2026
Google is removing the manual language-targeting setting on Search and Performance Max campaigns, replacing it with automatic detection.
So what for your team: If you've used manual language exclusion as a budget-control lever, that control disappears. Monitor automatic-detection behaviour closely once the change lands, especially on multilingual accounts.

Legacy Broad Match Blocked Ahead of Forced AI Max Migration
Ads · High significance · Tier 2 confirmed · Creation blocked August 3, 2026 · Migration mechanics published August 12 · Auto-migration September 1-30, 2026
Google blocked creation of new legacy broad-match settings and automatically created assets. Existing campaigns using them will be automatically migrated to AI Max during September.
So what for your team: This lands right before Q4 holiday spend ramps up. Audit any Search campaigns still on legacy broad match now, not once the forced migration is already underway.

Mandatory AI Ad Disclosure: "How This Ad Was Made"
Ads · High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · Announced July 9-10, 2026
Google introduced its first platform-wide, non-election AI-content disclosure requirement. A "How this ad was made" panel now appears on Search, YouTube, and Discover ads containing AI-generated or AI-edited elements.
So what for your team: Any campaign using AI-generated or AI-edited creative should expect the disclosure panel to appear automatically. This landed within weeks of an identical requirement on Meta Ads, a clear cross-platform trend rather than a one-off policy.

Bidding Overhaul: Target CPA/ROAS Delivery Change
Ads · High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · Announced June 15, 2026 · Rolling out August 17, 2026
Budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns will now deliver performance closer to their stated targets. Campaigns that were previously over-delivering (better performance than the target implied) may see CPAs rise or ROAS fall as a visible metric shift.
So what for your team: Flag this to clients and stakeholders ahead of the August 17 rollout. A metric shift here reflects a bidding-methodology change, not necessarily declining account health, and a panicked reaction before understanding the cause wastes everyone's time.

Branded Search Controls Inside AI Max
Ads · Medium significance · Tier 2 confirmed · June 1, 2026
A native toggle lets advertisers exclude brand and competitor queries from AI Max prospecting.
So what for your team: If you were holding off on AI Max because it risked cannibalizing branded-search campaigns, this control removes that specific objection.

DSA-to-AI Max Auto-Migration Delayed to February 2027
Ads · Medium significance · Tier 2 confirmed · Announced June 11-13, 2026
Google pushed back the automatic migration of Dynamic Search Ads to AI Max, originally scheduled sooner, to February 2027.
So what for your team: More runway to plan a voluntary DSA transition on your own timeline rather than facing a forced migration deadline.

Google Marketing Live 2026: Gemini Ad Formats and Asset Studio "Gemini Omni"
Ads · High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · May 20, 2026
Google announced Gemini-built ad formats, an expanded "Direct Offers" feature, and Asset Studio's "Gemini Omni," a multimodal video-generation tool for ad creative.
So what for your team: A significant expansion of AI-generated creative capability directly inside Ads. Combined with the July disclosure requirement above, expect AI-assisted creative to become the default rather than the exception.

AI Max Exits Beta; Extended to Shopping Campaigns
Ads · High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · Exited beta April 15, 2026 · Extended to Shopping April 30, 2026
AI Max, Google's AI-driven Search campaign automation layer, exited beta. Dynamic Search Ads, auto-created assets, and campaign-level broad match were scheduled to upgrade into it (see the delay entry above for the revised timeline), and it was extended to Shopping campaigns two weeks later.
So what for your team: AI Max is now a mainstream option rather than an experimental one; worth testing on a Shopping campaign if you haven't already.

Campaign Total Budgets Expanded to Search, PMax, and Shopping
Ads · Medium significance · Tier 1 confirmed · January 15, 2026
The fixed total-spend-over-date-range budgeting option, previously limited, expanded to Search, Performance Max, and Shopping campaigns. Google cites a 66% average reduction in manual budget adjustments for advertisers using it.
So what for your team: Useful for seasonal or fixed-window campaigns where you want to set a total budget once rather than pace it manually day by day.

Performance Max Video Limits Expanded, Creative A/B Testing Beta
Ads · Medium significance · Tier 2 confirmed · Reported January 12, 2026
PMax video-asset limits were expanded, and a creative A/B testing beta was introduced.
So what for your team: A/B testing was previously a major gap in PMax versus manually structured campaign types. Worth testing if you've avoided PMax specifically for its lack of creative-testing control.

Ads Advisor and Analytics Advisor
Ads · High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · November 12, 2025
Gemini-powered conversational agents launched inside the Ads interface. With advertiser approval, Ads Advisor can apply recommendations, generate keywords and assets, and diagnose policy disapprovals directly, rather than just suggesting actions.
So what for your team: The first agentic AI tool in Google Ads able to take account actions itself. Review any auto-apply permission settings carefully before granting them.

"Sponsored Results" Label and Hide-Sponsored Control
Ads · Medium significance · Tier 1 confirmed · October 13, 2025
Text ads were grouped under a persistent "Sponsored results" label, with a new one-click control letting users collapse or hide sponsored results entirely. The same treatment extended to Shopping ads.
So what for your team: A user-facing ad-collapse control is a real visibility risk on ad-heavy SERPs. Monitor CTR trends closely following this change if your account relies on dense ad placement.

Performance Max Control Expansion
Ads · Medium-High significance · Tier 1 confirmed · August 7, 2025
PMax gained shared negative-keyword lists across campaigns, a search-theme limit raised from 25 to 50, full device and age targeting plus a gender-targeting beta, new-versus-returning-customer reporting, and AI image-quality recommendations.
So what for your team: This directly addressed a long-standing advertiser complaint about lack of PMax control. If you paused PMax for that reason, it's worth revisiting the settings now available.
